Greetings community:
At ISER Caribe we work tirelessly for the restoration and conservation of marine ecosystems that sustain biodiversity and coastal communities in Puerto Rico. Today we extend this message to thank and recognize the relationship with our support network and to reinforce that today more than ever your financial support is crucial to the continuity of our projects.
As is public knowledge, the recent threat of federal funding cuts in the U.S. puts at risk the continuity of vital programs that support the resilience of our ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. If the proposed federal funding cuts materialize, they will significantly affect the daily operation of ISER Caribe in Puerto Rico. More than 90% of ISER Caribe's programs are funded through federal grants, and these reductions put at risk not only our research and conservation efforts, but also the salaries of our employees and the educational services we provide in Puerto Rico and the Greater Caribbean.
All donations are tax deductible on your income tax return. Thank you for considering this urgent request. With your support, you guarantee the continuity of our conservation, restoration, and climate justice projects so that marine and coastal resources, as well as the communities that depend on them, continue to thrive in Puerto Rico.
Our efforts over the past ten years
ISER Caribe has played a fundamental role in the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as promoting educational development on the island.
We have focused on:
Conservation and aquaculture
· Developing and operating the first terrestrial nurseries in Puerto Rico, housing corals, sea urchins and herbivorous crabs, supporting coral restoration efforts throughout the island. Our two nurseries in Ceiba and La Parguera are unique in the Greater Caribbean region.
· Producing more than 80,000 small coral fragments in our nurseries. More than 95% of the corals cultivated in our nurseries are threatened or endangered species.
· Housing multiple species of threatened (Dendrogyra cylindrus) and endangered (Acropora palmata) corals in our aquariums. Some of these species are already almost extinct in the wild.
· Releasing nearly 10,000 sea urchins on coral reefs across the island.
Outreach and Education
· Working closely with the Instituto Nueva Escuela, a nonprofit committed to transforming public education in Puerto Rico through the Montessori philosophy.
· Providing internships and training for high school students.
· Training hundreds of volunteers at our two nurseries in the science of caring for marine organisms, saltwater systems, and conservation.
· Being a learning center for visitors, students, and scientists from across the Caribbean, from our land-based nurseries.
Humanitarian Aid and Community Collaboration
· Providing fiscal sponsorship to multiple grassroots organizations in Puerto Rico focused on community work, arts, and culture in Puerto Rico.
· Supporting long-term recovery efforts by promoting sustainable development, rebuilding infrastructure, and strengthening local capacities to meet climate challenges.
